Vietnamese pot bellies
Dry skin is common - blown coat syndrome
Alopecia of acute onset, natural shedding process triggered by stress, heat, pregnancy or lactation
Greasy pig disease
Exudative epidermitis - staph Hyicus
Common in young immune immature pigs, dirty conditions, skin lesions from fights
Clinical signs of greasy pig disease
Dark scabs
Greasy, sticky feel
Rancid smell
Systemic signs, fever, diarrhea
Abx & sanitation
Pustular dermaitis
Strep groups
Common in recently weaned pigs
- poor hygiene
- environment
- needle teeth
Abx & improve hygiene
Swine pox
Direct contact or lice trauma
Papules & pustules on abdomen, thorax for 20d
Control 2nd bact infections & control lice
Porcine dermaitis & nephropathy syndrome
Porcine circovirus - immune complex mediated disease
12-16 week old pigs - very fatal
Sarcoptic mange
1 reason why pigs scratch
Caused by sarcoptes scabiei var suis
Mites are easily transferred from pig to pig - from dams
10% decreased in feed efficiency
Clinical signs of sarcoptic mange
Extreme pruritis
Loss of hair
Reddened skin from abrasions
DX is scraping from ears
Tx and PV of sarcoptic mange
Injectable avermectins - repeatx10days
Amitraz & organophosphates - EARS!!!***
Treat breeding pigs, air out buildings
Nutritional parakerotosis
Zinc deficiency, GI disease caused by too much Ca++ or phytates
clinical signs of nutritional parakeratosis
Erythematous Macule and papules
Hard dry brownish to blackish crusts
Pruritus and greasiness are not present
DX and Tx of nutritional parakeratosis
Retention of nuceli in keratin layer
Add zinc and fatty acids to diet
Juvenile pustular psoriasiform dermatitis pityriasis rosea
Common in 3-14w, white breeds - genetically linked
clinical signs of JPPD
Erythematous Macule & papules on belly then spread
Circular lesions w central crater w scabs
Pruritis is absent
Pigs appear healthy & growing
Lesions last 4 weeks
