german measles.
caused by togavirus.
spreads by respi infection.
incubation
12-23 days. usually 15-21.
libe virus provide lifelong immunity
lesions
prodome 1-5 days of fever malaise sore throat eye pain headache red eyes runny nose and adenopathy.
pain on lateral and upward eye movement.
exanthem begins on face and progress caudad covering the entire body in 24 hours. and resplving on the third day.
lesions: pale pink morbilliform macules smaller than those of rubeola.
eruption may resemble roseola or erythema infectiosum.
forchheimer sign: exanthem of pinhead sized red macules or petechiae on the soft palate and uvula.
post cervixal suboccipital and postauricular lymphadenitis occurs in more than half.
milder than rubeola.
dx confirmed by
Rubella specific IgM in oral fluids or the serum.
comb w PCr Will result in rapid confirmation of most cases of rubella within the 1st few days of appearance of these sx.
