Measles
incubation period 9-12 days.
prodome- fever malaise conjunctivitis and prominent upper respi sx( cough coryza)
pathog: koplik spots. appear during prodome.
spots apper 1st- buccal mucosa nearest to lower molars as 1mm white papules on an erythematous base. spread to other areas of buccal mucosa and pharyx.
after 1-7 days exanthem appears usually macular lr morbilliform lesions ok the anterior scalp line and behind ears. lesions behin as discrete erythematous papules that grad coalesce. rash spreads quickly over the face then by second or third day extends to trunk to extremities. bu third day, whole body.
after 6-7 days, exanthem clears w simultaneous subsidence of the fever.
measlea complications
otitia media pneumonia encephalitis thrombocytopenic purpura encephalitis <1% of cases can be fatal. assoc w fetal death in pregnant women.
Koplik spots image
early phase of measles.
tiny grains of white sand each surrounded by a red ring. found on the buccal mucosa opposite 1 and 2nd upper molars.
Admin of high doses of .. reduxe the morbidity and mortality rate of hospitalized children w measles.
vitamin A.
2 doses of retinyl palmitate 200,000 IU 24 hours apart are recommended for all xhildren 6-24 mos of age.
live vaccination recomm at
12 mos w a bosster at 4-5 yo.
faint maculopapular exanthem may occur 7-10 days agter immunization.
Prophylaxis w vaccination and immune globulin should be offered to exposed susceptible persons.
