What does it mean when the arm is horizontal?

What 2 lights can it display?

A

At horizontal position will show a yellow light. Means caution, be prepared to stop at the next signal.
At raised or lowered positions with green light, means all associated stop signals from the same single box are clear.

Stacking - normal for shunting. ( read top to bottom and left to right)
A route indicator- displays a letter or number to show the route which the movement is being signalled.

Describe stop board?
When can you proceed beyond the stop board?

A

White vertical rectangle
Red circle at top
Black letters saying STOP, may also show other instructions and be illuminated.
If either the instructions on the stop board have been carried out or you have been given permission to do so by the authorised person
If passed without authority it is a SPAD

Describe a PLB?
Where is it found?

A

A red double sided octagonal board and is visible on the line in both directions.
It has a steady or flashing red light at top
It had the word STOP written in the centre of the board in white capitals
A PLB identifies the boundary of a possession. They may also be used as part of the protection for a line blockage.

SPAD indicator

Describe appearance, indication and meaning?

A

It has a 3 aspect signal head fitted on a blue back plate.
Normally positioned 50metres beyond certain signals.
Normally unlit. If signal is passed at danger the indicator will be lit and display a flashing red light in the top and bottom aspect with a steady red light with the word STOP in the centre aspect.

A

Provided on approach to certain signals which have restricted view.
White circle with a black bar.
At horizontal position means the signal to which it applies is at danger.
At 45° means the signal to which it applies is displaying a proceed aspect.
At 45° with a green background indicates a that the signal to which it applies is showing a green aspect
A black bar with a fish tail end relates to a distant signal.
At the horizontal position means distant signal to which it applies is at caution.
At 45° position means the distant signal is clear.

A

When the word OFF appears the signal to which it applies is showing a proceed aspect

Why is it provided?
What does it look like?
Describe the different positions the PRK can display?

A
Is provided where it is necessary for the driver to receive advance information about the route.
It displays an arrow which is pointing in the same direction as the junction indicator.
Arrow pointing:-
45° raised to the left = position 1
90° to the left = position 2
45° lowered to the left = position 3
45° raised to the right = position 4
90 ° to the right = position 5
45° lowered to the right = position 6

AWS cancelling indicator sign
Why are they needed?
Describe their appearance?
Describe their location?

A

In some locations where the AWS magnet is not suppressed a cancelling indicator is provided to tell the driver that the AWS warning indication does not apply to trains travelling in that direction.
Where the AWS magnet is permanently installed the AWS indicator is a ST Andrew’s flag
Where the AWS magnet is temporary installed the AWS indicator is a yellow square with a black diagonal cross (X)
The cancelling indicators are normally positioned 180 metres after passing over the AWS magnet.

Describe why they are provided and their appearance?

A

Where AWS is not provided at a station on a line equipped with AWS.
2 types of sign, the start of the AWS gap and the end of the AWS gap.
Start of AWS gap = white circle with AWS written in black capitals inside and a red diagonal cross (X)
End of AWS gap = white square with AWS written in black capitals.

A

Provided where AWS is not provided in the opposite direction on a bi directional line.

Start of the relevant section of line concerned = white diamond with AWS written in black capitals and a red cross (X) through it

End of the section, normal arrangements resume = white diamond with AWS written in black capitals

Reason for use?

A

A yellow square with a black capital R on top of a yellow rectangle with 2 white discs on top of a yellow square with a black number (speed).
A repeating warning board is placed on the end of a platform or a siding or dead end platform to remind remind the driver there is a temporary speed restriction ahead.

Emergency indicator
Describe appearance?
Reason for use?

A

Yellow vertical rectangle with black Chevrons. White flashing lights in top two black Chevrons.
When an emergency speed restriction is to be imposed an emergency indicator will also be used. The indicator has flashing white lights which will be working at all times.
An AWS magnet is provided on the approach to the emergency indicator.
There will be no AWS in AWS gap areas.

If there is a number inside the box this means the maximum number of minutes that can elapse before the driver contacts the signaller.

Describe different types and their meaning?

A

Square with chequered red and white squares with “ warning” and “limited clearance” written in red. Means you can use as it is in a position of safety in relation to the adjacent running line and protection is provided by the presence of your train
Either a SPT or lineside telephone with a yellow roundel or a white or yellow diamond with a black cross (X)
Means dont normally use. Only leave cab in an emergency or if the driver on another line or competent person has told you that the signaller has blocked the line(s) adjacent to the telephone and it is safe to get down from your cab to use the telephone.

Purpose?

A

The sign means that a telephone is not provided but the presence of the train is indicated to the signaller. If a telephone number is provided below a driver may only leave cab to use a lineside telephone in an emergency or if told the adjacent line(s) have been blocked

Purpose?

A

Three types

1) yellow vertical rectangle with three black diagonal marks going left to right and bottom to top. Gives advance warning of sandite application site.
2) yellow vertical rectangle with 2 black diagonal marks going left to right and bottom to top. Means to start applying sandite.
3) yellow vertical rectangle with one black diagonal mark going left to right and bottom to top. Means to STOP sandite.

Describe appearance?
Purpose?

A

3 types

1) White vertical rectangle with 3 red diagonal marks going left to right and bottom to top. Informs driver that there is 300 metres to the signal.
2) White vertical rectangle with 2 red diagonal marks going left to right and bottom to top. Informs driver that there is 200 metres to the signal.
3) White vertical rectangle with 1 red diagonal mark going left to right and bottom to top. Informs driver that there is 100 metres to the signal.

Limited clearance sign

Meaning?

A

This sign means there is no position of safety on this side of the railway for the length of the structure. It is not safe to enter or stand at that location when a train is passing.

Purpose?

A

This sign means that there is no position of safety on this side of the railway for the length of the structure however there are positions of safety on the opposite side of the railway line
