When to call an extra Engine & Ladder
- Fully involved floor from front to rear
2. When “All Hands” are operating and the fire is still not under control
When to issue a 2nd Alarm
- Two or more floors are fully involved
- Top floor fire that has extended into the cockloft
- Two buildings are involved
When to issue a 3rd Alarm
-A fire that extends beyond 2 buildings
Command Post Location
In proximity to the front of the fire building
Row Frame Characteristics
- 2 to 5 stories in height
- 20’ to 30’ wide
- 40’ to 60’ deep
- Built in 1800’s and early 1900’s
- COMMON COCKLOFT to all buildings in the row (MAJOR PROBLEM)
*NOTE: ALL WOOD CONSTRUCTION (Interior & Exterior). Danger of fire spread in all directions
Row Frame Types (there are 2)
Brownstone Type
- 3 Windows across the front
- One apartment per floor
- No Rear Fire Escape
OLT Type
- 4 Windows across the front
- 2 apartments per floor (Railroad flats)
- Rear fire escapes are present
Cockloft Height
-Varies from one foot to a height tall enough to stand in
Horizontal Fire Spread in Row Frames
- COMMON COCKLOFT
- Common Cornice
- Common Cellar
- Thin and flimsy walls between buildings
- Wood Cellar beams in adjoining buildings
- Windows and Siding to adjoining buildings
Ladder Company’s General Areas of Responsibility for a Top Floor Fire in a Brownstone-type Row Frame
- Inside team of 1st to arrive Ladder, responsible for VES of Top Floor INCLUDING examination of Cockloft
- 2nd Ladder Company to arrive, split the Company and examine exposures 2 and 4 for extension. Inside of 2nd Ladder should operate in the most severe exposure
Ladder Company’s General Areas of Responsibility for a Top Floor Fire in an OLT-type Row Frame
- Inside team of 1st to arrive Ladder, responsible for VES of Top Floor INCLUDING examination of Cockloft
- Inside team of 2nd Ladder Company to arrive, responsible for VES of the Adjoining Apartment INCLUDING examination of the Cockloft
