He was a leader among literary figures that was interested in the medieval past. created of the modern historical novels his most popular book was Ivanhoe.

emotionalism; created the movement sturm und drang (storm and stress) which was an attempt to shock their contemporaries but put in forbidden things (suicide, illness, duels of men, fascination of death); also created the sorrows of young Werther where he grabs a pistol and kills himself, an injection of his own passion and own experiences
