Who is Sun Yatsen?
he lead the charge in modernization of china. a key figure of transition from empire to republic. his westernized education in Hawaii influenced his dreams for china.
What did Sun Yatsen establish?
established a revolutionar movement that changed into a political party called the Kuomintang or Chinese nationalist party. they were ready to accept help from the Communist government of the soviet union, but yatsen was not a communist
What was Sun Yatsen planning accordingly for a unified china?
a planned northern expedition. however, he died unexpectedly and it was handed over to Chiang Kai-Shek.
Who was Mao Zedong?
He learned that defense paid off in a struggle, power flows from the barrel of a gun. he converted to Marxian socialism. one of the founders of the Chinese communist party.
What was the Chinese communist party going to do?
Unify china based on China’s peasantry
What did Mao Zedong advocate for? What was his early goal?
Land reform, for land to be resdistrubted of land for the peasantry to gain land. his goal was to the overthrow the Qing dynasty. he wanted to get rid of monarchy as he felt it was out of touch with the rest of the world
What was the 1911 Revolution?
it began as a mutiny between army units towards the incompetence of the Qing Dynasty. the goal was to throw the Qing dynasty out of office. it was successful

Sun was named the provisional president of china of the republic of china. causing the official launch of china
Who was General Yuan Shigai?
he was a military figured that convinced the Qing Dynasty that they were doomed and the emperors should abdicate. He said he was the only one to bring peace & unity to china. became president of the republic of china after sun
What did General Yuan Shigai do?
decided to use his own power to build up dreams of dictatorship. he used his army to restore a monarchy which caused a rebellion to be called against him.
Who was Joseph Stalin?
- one of the most brutal man in history
- supported the Chinese nationalist party
- thought that this would help the communist government of soviet union

It broke the encirclement of the chinese nationalist. it was a 6,000 mile march where they set up in Shensi province. he gave them protection and disturbed land reforms within the province
