Role of lipids in the body Flashcards
Texture and flavour
Lipids affect the texture and flavour in desirable and undesirable ways. It can be a main factor in food choice and patterns, although, in personal experience it is often more positive than negative, further pushing consumption.
Satiety (fullness)
Ingestion of fat induces a sense of fullness, leading to a reduction of food intake.
Energy
Half the fuel the body uses is from lipids. Energy from lipids can stored (triglycerides).
Body heat
Storage of fat insulates the body, helping with body heat modulation (heat staying in the body).
Membrane Structure
Lipids function as the essential building block of a cell membrane.
Organ protection
Triglycerides (stored fat) provides protection for internal organs with a layer of padding.
Fatty acids
Fatty acids can produce and control hormones, store fat as energy, padding, insulation and production of cell membranes.
Regulation of bodily processes
Fat regulates immune cell activation, hormones and controls what goes in and out of your cells.
Vitamins
Fat acts as a solvent for some vitamins (fat soluble ones), helping the body absorb the nutrience from the vitamins.
