Digestive system Flashcards
Mouth
Digestion begins here with enzymes from saliva and chewing.
Esophagus
The esophagus moves food down the throat to he stomach with contraptions.
-A muscular tube that connects the mouth to the stomach. It uses rhythmic contractions (peristalsis) to move food down to the stomach.
Stomach
A hollow organ that holds food. This organ mixes the food with stomach enzymes and churns the food into a semi-liquid form. Enzymes begin to breakdown protein here.
Pancreas
An organ that produces digestive enzymes for the small intestine and digestion. It also produces insulin, which regulates blood sugar levels.
Liver
The largest internal organ, responsible for producing bile (which helps digest fats), processing nutrients absorbed from the small intestine, and detoxifying harmful substances (that’s why alcohol damages your liver)
Gallbladder
A small pouch that stores and concentrates bile from the liver until it is needed for digestion in the small intestine.
Small intestine
The small intestine is a thin, long coiled tube which has multiple functions, the product of the stomach is mixed with bile from the liver and pancreatic juice to aid in digestion (this part is called the Deodenum).
The next section of small intestine is called the Jejunum, it absorbs nutrience.
The final section- Ileum, absorbs bile acids and vitamin B12 before passing the remaining waste into the large intestine.
Large intestine (Colon)
The large intestine is wide but shorter, it consists of several parts, that each absorb water and salt from the remaining indigestible food.
The beginning of the large intestine is called the Cecum, which connect the Colon to the Illeum.
Next is the ascending Colon with moves food up the large intestine (not back where it came, a new path that circles around the small intestine).
Then the transverse colon, which sends food across the body (along the abdomen).
After the descending colon which pushes food down the large intestine into the sigmoid colon, which is shaped like an S-bend from a racetrack- this leads to the rectum.
Rectum
The final section of the large intestine that stores feces before they are expelled from the body.
Sphincter
There is an inner (internal) and outer (external) sphincter at the end of the anal canal. These muscles close off the opening of the bowel (anus).
Anus
The opening at the end of the digestive tract through which feces exit the body. It has sphincter muscles that control the release of waste.
