Functions of protein in the body Flashcards
Muscles
Protein builds muscle. Also helps with growth and repair of muscle.
Hair and nails
Protein helps hair growth and repair as well as strengthening nails.
Cellular messengers
Cellular receptors are proteins. They transmit signals to coordinate biological processes.
Cellular construction workers
Protein is the working molecules and building blocks in all cells. Turning DNA to RNA, then RNA into protein.
Antibodies
Protein helps immunoglobulin, or antibodies to fight infection, thus boosting bodily immunity.
Energy
If the body isn’t getting enough energy from other sources, protein can be broken down into energy.
Blood
Protein stabilizes blood sugar levels and can keep water in blood.
Hormones
Proteins can produce protein derived hormones which regulate bodily processes, including, growth development, metabolism and reproduction.
Brain and nerves
Protein is used by the brain for synthesis of neurotransmitters and neuromodulators.
Fluid, salt and acid balance
Proteins can increase acid levels in the body, balance fluids by keeping water in the blood and increase plasma sodium levels.
Enzymes
Proteins can bind to an enzyme, regulating enzymes.
Growth and maintenance
Protein helps repair and build your body tissues
