Carbohydrates Flashcards
Monosaccharides
Monosaccharide is a carb that has only one unit structure of carbohydrates (single sugar molecule), due to only being made up of one unit, it cannot be separated into simpler sugars. This is a simple carb.
Disaccharides
A disaccharide are two monosaccharides bonded together, so it is made up of two sugar molecules, so it can also be split into simpler sugars. This is a simple carb (1-2 units of sugar molecules).
Polysaccharides
Polysaccharides are carbohydrates that are made up of several monosaccharides (sugar molecule units), connected by glycosidic bonds. This is a complex carb.
Monosaccharides examples
Glucose and fructose.
Disaccharides examples
Sucrose, lactose, and maltose.
Polysaccharides examples
Starch, glycogen, cellulose, heparin, and peptidoglycan.
