Ribs Flashcards
What are the main SDs of the ribs?
- Strain
- Rub stuck in inhalation
- Posterior stuck rib
What are the facets on the costovertebral rib articulations?
There is one demifacet on the superior aspect of one vertebrae, and one demifacet on the inferior aspect of the vetebra above
What are the two types of rib articulations on the posterior aspect of the ribs?
Costovertebral
Costotransverse
What are the costotransverse facets?
Articulation of the rib tubercle with the transverse process of the corresponding vetebra
What are the two articulations on the anterior aspect of the ribs?
- Costochondral joints
2. Chondrosternal joints
What is the pump handle motion of the ribs? Which ribs have this motion?
The anterior aspect of the ribs move up with inhalation
Ribs 1-5
What is the bucket handle motion of the ribs? Which ribs have this motion?
The lateral aspect of the ribs moves superiorly, increases the transverse diameter of the thorax
Ribs 6-10
What is the caliper motion of the ribs? Which ribs have this motion?
With inhalation, the ribs move around the single articulation (move laterally)
Ribs 11 and 12
“Locked up” ribs move easier with (BLANK) than with (BLANK)
“Locked up” ribs move easier with inhalation than with exhalation
Ease of motion of ‘locked up” ribs are with what?
Exhalation
Ribs with a “locked up” SD will not go down with what as much as the same ribs on the other side?
Exhalation
“locked down” ribs are what?
When ribs move easier towards exhalation than inhalation
Which rib do you treat with locked up ribs?
Lower ones
Which rib do you treat with locked dow ribs?
Higher ones
What is the “key rib”?
The rib within a group that is primarily responsible for maintaining that dysfunction
