Freyette's Principles Flashcards
What is a vertebral unit?
Two vertebra and all of the stuff that holds it together (muscles, disc, vasculature etc)
What is the neutral position of the vertebrae?
In the sagittal plane
The neutral position is important why?
It is the beginning of flexion or extension
What axis does flexion of the spine rotate about? Extension?
Transverse for both
What is segmental flexion of vertebrae? Regional ?
Upper vertebrae flexes relative to the one below
REgional = more than one
What happens to the neural foramen with flexion of the spine? Extension?
Flexion = opens up Extension = closes
Vertebral side bending takes place about what axis?
Anterior-posterior axis
What happens to the facet of the vertebrae with sidebending?
Opens on the side bending away from
Rotation of the vertebrae involves what axis?
Vertical
What are the four factors that determine spinal motion?
Facet joints
Ligaments
Long restrictors
Short restrictors
True or false: rotation and sidebending of a vertebrae are coupled
True
Thoracic facets face what direction?
Posterolaterally in the vertical plane
Lumbar facets face what direction?
Medially at 45 degrees to the sagittal plane
What are the three motions that the thoracic facets allow for?
Rotation
Sidebending
Flex/exten
What are the three motions that the LUMBAR facets allow for?
flex
sidemebending
NO rotation
