24-Hour recall
Client identifies what food and beverages they consumed in the previous 24 hours
Advantages and disadvantages of the 24- Hour recall
Advantage: Easy to remember what one ate the day before. Disadvantage: Limited view (one data point)
Usual intake
Similar to 24-hour recall, asks patient to identify normal intake pattern including frequency and amounts consumed.
Advantage/Disadvantage of usual intake
ADV Tends to reflect long-term dietary habits; DIS Doesn’t work well for those who vary their food intake.
Diet history focused on specific components
Focus in on key nutrition concerns
Advantages and disadvantages of specific components
Advantage: minimal question, but gets the necessary information.
NIA
(Nutrient intake analysis) a.k.a “Calorie Count”; occurs over three day period;
What is the main reason for using NIA?
Identify inadequate food intake in order to document a need for alternative feeding modality. Focus tends to be on energy and protein intake.

Refused-0% ; Poor- 25%, Fair- 50%, Good-75%, All- 100%
What are the shortcomings of any diet history?
1) Honesty of patient 2) limited amount of information 3) only gives you a general idea
Why would a clinician use a 3-5 day record?
For an outpatient setting where follow-up will occur
Advantages and disadvantages of a 3-5 day record
Advantages: More thorough, wide range Disadvantages: burdensome for the patient
Why would a clinician use a Food frequency record?
limited use in an acute health care setting; used when a researcher needs broad information about a patient’s diet.
What are the shortcomings of any diet history?
