Ex 2: Nutrition Focused Physical Assessment Flashcards
Functional assessment tests the ability to perform:
1) self care 2) live independently 3) physical activities
What marks the loss of ability to provide self care?
Physical inabilities, cognitive impairment
Sarcopenia
Complex syndrome associated with the age related loss of muscle mass alone or with an increase in fat mass; begins in adulthood and continues until the end of life
Describe sacropenic muscle loss during adulthood
From 20-80 years of age there is an estimated 30% loss of skeletal muscle, decrease in the quality of muscle, leads to loss of strength
Sacropenia prevalence
Affects 30% of adults over 60 and 50% of adults over 80
What percentage of older adults are functionally disabled?
20%
With sarcopenia, 3 days of bed rest decreases muscle mass by what percentage?
10-20%
Diagnosing sarcopenia
1) gait speed “ 0.6-1.45 meters per second average” or 44 minute mile-18.5 minute mile 2)comparative ultrasound
What should be the amount of protein needs to be eaten per meal to minimize the effects of sarcopenia?
25-30 G protein per meal. Remember to stay active and have good nutrition
Techniques to assess muscle strength
1) handgrip dynamometry 2) Groningen fitness test for the elderly 3) lower extremity physical function and performance
ADLs vs IADL
1) ADL - activities for daily living ( self care, mobility, avoiding falls based on strength and stamina 2) IADLs - instrumental activities of daily living (based on more cognitive/functional capabilities)
Tests for cognitive ability
1) three item recall 2) animal-naming test 3) clock drawing test
Failure to thrive
Not a single disease or condition. Non-specific manifestation or an underlying physical, mental and/or psychosocial condition
Main areas of assessment and treatment ftt
1) impaired physical function or status 2) under nutrition or nutrition
3) depression or depressive symptoms
4) cognitive impairment or decline
