Respiratory System #3 Flashcards
Spirometry
measures respiratory volumes
Total lung volume
total lung capacity varies on
1. Height
2. Age (age increases, TLC decreases due to the loss of elasticity)
Tidal volume
amount of air inhaled or exhaled when resting
- 500 mL
Inspiratory Reserve Volume
amount of air that you can forcefully inhale after a tidal inhalation
Expiratory Reserve Volume
amount of air you can forcefully exhale a tidal exhalation
Vital Capacity
max amount of exhalation after a maximal inhalation
FEV 1.0
- Force Expiratory Volume
- 1.0 seconds
how much you can exhale in 1 second
- 80% of vital capacity
- ex: 4L of vital capacity = about 3.2 FEV 1.0
- less than 80% can be due to Obstructive Pulmonary Disease; Chronic Bronchitis
