Define auscultation
the action of listening to sounds from the heart, lungs, or other organs
- with a stethoscope
Abnormal Breathe Sounds
- Wheezing (causes)
narrowing of the airways, during exhale and inhale

- Rhonchi
low pitched wheezing during coughing
- sounds like a snore
Abnormal Breathe Sounds
- Strider
high pitched “musical sound” during inspiration
- sound is louder over the throat
- caused by blocking of the larynx
- common in children
Abnormal Breathe Sounds
- Crackles
high pitched sounds heard in the lungs due to fluid in the small airways
Fine crackles vs Coarse Crackles
: Fine crackles; high pitched, popping lungs sounds
- sound like wood burning in a fireplace
- start at the base of the lungs, where there is fluid
: Coarse Crackle; loud and longer coarse rattling sound
- sounds pouring water out a bottle
- heard on the anterior or posterior chest wall
Define Pleural Friction rub
two inflamed pleural surfaces rub against each other during respiration
- sounds like walking on fresh snow
Define Pneumothorax
collapsed lung in which there is no air movement in that area
