Covid-19 + res. system Flashcards
What happens in your body when you contract coronavirus?
virus comes in contact with cells in the throat, nose or lungs
- one spike on the virus inserts into a receptor molecule. Allowing to get inside your cell.
What causes your body to develop pneumonia?
the virus overwhelms immune cells causing the bronchioles and alveoli to inflame
- inflammation causes alveoli to fill with fluid
- this can cause difficulty breathing, chest pain, coughing
How would a vaccine work?
getting a shot containing a faint version of the virus
- cells in the immune system would make markers, called antibodies
Pathway of CO2 + O2 in the capillaries/alveoli
Oxygen from the air you breathe passes into the capillaries, and then CO2 from your body passes out the capillaries into the alveoli, so the lungs can get rid of it when you exhale
- capillaries > alveoli > lungs
