Digestive System #2 Flashcards
1
Q
Saliva
- purpose
A
purpose is to
- cleanse the mouth
- moisten food to move it down into the pharynx
- help with chemical breakdown
2
Q
Salivary Glands:
A
- Parotid: infront of the ears
- Sublingual: under the tongue
- Submandibular: under the mandible
3
Q
Composition of Saliva
A
- 98% water
- contains antibody, lysosomes
- mucus
- salivary amylase (breaks down starch)
4
Q
Pharynx and more
- purpose
A
- Pharynx: throat
- Uvula: blocks nasal cavity
- Epiglottis: blocks of glottis to prevent food from entering the larynx (prevent choking)
5
Q
Esophagus
- histology
A
- nonkeratinized stratified squamous; acts as a protective layer
- smooth muscle (under ANS control)
6
Q
What does the stomach produce?
A
produces hydrochloric acid (kills bacteria) “stomach acid”
-can lead to acid reflux “heart burn” which effects the esophagus
7
Q
Stomach characteristics
A
- very muscular
- oblique circular longitudinal layers
- has Rugae; which folds and expands
- stomach connects to the esophagus via cardiac sphincter and duodenum via pyloric sphincter
- lots of movement called churning and peristalsis
8
Q
Functions of the Stomach
A
- the most vital function is it produces intrinsic factor
- stores food
- digestion; chemical + physical (vomiting)
- ex: vomiting to make it into Chyme - produces HCI-acid
9
Q
What is Intrinsic Factor
A
absorbs vitamin B 12
10
Q
What is Chyme?
A
liquefied food
- occurs during vomiting
11
Q
Stomach Ulcers
A
a bacterial infection called H. Pylori
- due to an overuse of Asprin
- causes the protective mucus layer lining of the stomach to erode
