respiratory system Flashcards
1
Q
function of respiratory system
A
to provide an extensive surface area for gas exchange between air and blood by inhaling and exhaling
- Produce sounds and ability to smell
2
Q
path of air
A
- Nose/nasal cavity - warms + moistens + filters air with mucus and nasal hairs
- Pharynx - passageway for food and air
- Larynx - where vocal cords are
- Trachea - connects larynx to bronchi and brings air to and from lungs for respiration
- Epiglottis - prevents food from entering trachea
- Lungs - protect heart and surround bronchioles and alveoli, providing space for gas exchange
- Bronchi → Bronchioles - deliver oxygen to the lungs
- Alveoli - where gas exchange of oxygen and CO2 take place because of the direct contact with capillaries
- Oxygen diffuse through walls of alveoli and into red blood cells
- Large surface area covered in capillaries show that alveoli are well adapted for
3
Q
diaphram
A
muscle that aids in breathing by contracting and moving rib cage up and down
