Homeostasis pt 1 Flashcards
1
Q
Homeostasis
A
series of control systems that ensure our body maintains constant temperature and optimum conditions
1. pH
2. Temperature
3. Ion + gas concentration
Endocrine + nervous system maintain homeostasis by responding to a stimulus (input) → producing a signal that will generate a response (output)
Response will cause changes t external + internal conditions in the body (feedback loops)
2
Q
negative feedback loops
A
- When body needs to slow down/stop a process happening
-Original stimulus is reversed (i.e. thermoregulation)- EX: stimulus (body temp. decreases/increases) → change (shivering/sweating) → change reverses (body temp. increases/decreases)
3
Q
positive feedback loops
A
- Occurs when you need to amplify/increase body’s response to a stimulus
- Change occurs in one direction and continues until something stops it (i.e child birth)
- EX: stimulus (pressure of child on cervix) → contractions begin → more pressure on cervix, oxytocin released → more contractions and more oxytocin released until baby is born
