enzymes Flashcards
1
Q
enzymes
A
proteins that speed up chemical reactions in living things
- Function under certain conditions of temperature, concentration, salinity, and acidity
2
Q
enzyme overview
A
- Activation Energy - energy needed to start reactions
- Enzymes work to lower activation energy by weakening chemical bonds so that chemical reactions can occur quicker
- More enzymes → less activation energy
- Specific and reusable
3
Q
structure and process of an ezyme
A
- Substrate - molecule that the enzyme will work on
- Active Site - specific shaped area on the enzyme that matches substrate
- Enzyme grabs onto substrate via active site
- Catalysis - substrate is broken down/combined with another molecule to make something new
- Enzyme then lets to of substrate, which is now the product
4
Q
influential factors
A
- Substrate Concentration
- More substrate → faster rate of reaction until point of saturation - Temperature/pH (Acidity/Basicity)
- Enzyme most active at optimum temperature and work best at specific pH
- Temperatures/pH outside of optimum → lower enzyme activity/enzyme denatures
