used to treat minor symptoms of allergy and common cold; used in hospital as pre-medication for blood transfusions, certain meds, and chemo
diphenhydramine side effects
drowsiness, can casue idiopathic response in children; antocholinergic effects: dry mouth, tachycardia, mild hypotension
diphenhydramine contraindications
don;t use in benign prostatic hyperplasia, narrow angle glaucoma, GI obstruction, use cautiously with asthma
loratadine ther class

loratadine pharm class
h1 receptor agonist (2nd gen), antihistamine
loratadine MOA
minor symptoms of allergy: pruritis, watery eyes, runny nose, and sneezing *long acting
loratadine side effects
does NOT cause drowsiness, can be used in children and elderly, can cause headache, dizziness and GUI distress
loratadine contraindications
dont use in children under 2
loratadine nursing considerations
teach how to take, overdose leads to loratadine toxicity which is cardiac, renal and hepatic probs

drug for allergic rhinitis, asthma, and skin inflammation

decrease local inflammation in nasal passages, reduce stuffiness

rare: nasal irritation and epistaxis

nasal decongestant

alpha adrenergic stimulation, arterioles in teh nasal mucosa to constrict, dries the mucous membranes, last 10+ hrs, can also relieve eye redness in eye drops
oxymetazoline (Afrin) adverse effects
rebound congestion if used for 3-5 days+, minor stingin and drying in nasal mucosa
dextromethorphan (Robitussen) ther class
cough suppressant

centrally acting antitussive

acts in medulla w no euphoric effects

chronic cough due to asthma or COPD, don’t use in children under 6
