Lipids prototypes Flashcards
atorvastatin therapeutic class
dyslipidemic or lipid lowering
atorvastatin pharm class
HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor
atorvastatin MOA
lowers LDL cholesterol and inhibits HMG-CoA which is needed to create cholesterol in the liver, and opens up more LDL receptors to remove LDL; decreases triglycerides and increases HDL
atorvastatin benefits
slows the progression of CAD and mortality
atorvastatin route
PO only, given with food to reduce GI distress, and given at night when the liver is making cholesterol
atorvastatin side effects
headache, muscle/joint pain, GI upset, liver damage
atorvastatin adverse effects (serious)
Rhabdomylosis (from muscle joint damage), increase levels of digoxin, and grapefruit juice inhibits metabolism of drug
cholestyramine therapeutic class
antihyperlipidemic
cholestyramine pharm class
bile acid sequestrant (collector)
cholestyramine MOA
binds with bile acids as an insoluble complex that binds with bile salts and cholesterol and is excreted in the feces; liver responds by making more LDL receptors which reduce cholesterol in the blood
cholestyramine route
PO, as a poweder mixed with water, only givne 2-4 hrs after any other medications
cholestyramine side effects
gas, bloating, constipation, and nausea
cholestyramine contraindications
warfarin and digoxin, patients with biliary obstruction (gallbladder issues)
gemfibrozil therapeutic class
antihyperlipidemic
gemfibrozil pharm class
fibric acid drug
