Respiratory: Asthma and COPD Prototypes Flashcards
albuterol ther class
short acting bronchodialator (SABA)
albuterol pharm class
beta adrenergic agonist
albuterol MOA
stimulates beta 2 receptors in smooth muscle of bronchi and bronchioles which produces bronchidialation
albuterol use
rescue inhaler for wheezing, difficulty breathing due to bronchoconstriction
albuterol side effects
it mimics sympathetic stimulation, so it can casue jitteriness, tachycardia, tremor, shakiness, agitation/anxiety
albuterol cautions
those with HTN, seizure, diabetes
albuterol admin
1-2 puffs, 5 mins between each puff
beclomethasone ther class
anti-inflammatory for asthma
beclomethasone pharm class
inhaled corticosteroid
beclomethasone MOA
decrease release of inflammatory mediators, block production of cytokines, decrease recruitment of eosinophils
beclomethasone use
asthma, COPD, COVID
beclomethasone side effects
less side severe: oral thrush, cough, headache, sore throat, hoarseness
beclomethasone expected outcomes
often taken daily to control asthma NOT used for immediate relief
montelukast ther class
anti-inflammatory for asthma/allergies
montelukast pharm class
leukotrine modifier (PO)
montelukast MOA
leukotrine receptor blocker (leukotrines=pro-inflammatory mediators produced during trauma, infection, and inflammation), reduces bronchoconstriction and inflammation from leukotrines
montelukast use
for long-term treatment of asthma/allergies in children/adults, decreases the use of beta2 agonist meds, improves night-time symptoms
ipratropium ther class
bronchodialator
ipratropium pharm class
anticholinergic
ipratropium MOA
blocks PNS receptors in the bronchi, which results in bronchodialtion
ipratropium use
asthma/COPD (inhaler)
ipratropium side effects
dry mouth, irritation of the pharynx leading to hoarseness
