Research Methods - Experimental Method Flashcards
What does experimental method mean ?
Involves the manipulation of an dependant variable to measure the effect on the dependant variable. Experiments may be laboratory
Field
Natural
Quasi
What is an aim ?
A general statement of what researcher intends to investigate the purpose of the study
What is a hypothesis ?
A clear, precise testable statement that dates the relationship between variables being investigated
An example of an aim
‘Investigate whether drinking energy drinks makes people more talkative
What are the two types of hypothesis ?
Directional
Non directional hypothesis
What is a directional hypothesis ?
States direction of the difference in the relationship
Words included : more or less, higher or lower , faster or slower
What is a non directional hypothesis ?
Does not state nature of the difference
Key words used : difference
Directional hypothesis and non directional hypothesis examples ?
‘People who drink speedupp become more talkative than people who dont’
‘People who dont drink sppedupp differ in terms of talkativeness compared with people who dont drink speedupp’
When do use directional and non directional hypothesis
Findings of previous research show a particular outcome or direction - directional
No previous research -non directional research
What is a correlation study ?
A significant difference between variables
What words are used in a correlation study ?
There will be a significant ‘correlation / relationship’
If a difference is implied or comparison what does that notify too ?
That it is a hypothesis and not a correlation study
When making a directional hypothesis what should you use ?
More or less (likely) , higher or lower and faster
