cognition and development - piagets stages Flashcards
name the 4 stages in piagets theory and age in which they occur
sensorimotor stage - >0-2 years
pre - operational -> 2-7 years
concrete operational -> 7-11 years
formal operations -> 11 years +
what is object permanence
The ability to realise that an object still exists when it passes out of the visual field.
what is conservation
The ability to realise that quantity remains the same even when the appearance of an object or group of objects changes.
what is egocentrism
The child’s tendency to only be able to see the world from their own point of view.
what is class inclusion
An advanced classification skill in which we recognise that classes of objects have subsets and are themselves subsets of larger classes.
what happens in the sensorimotor stage
physical sensations + basic coordination
other people as separate objects
develop object permanence after 8 months
what happens in the preoperatioanl stage
children cannot conserve
children are egocentric
find class inclusion difficult
what happens in the concrete operations stage
most children can conserve
perform better on egocentrism + class inclusion
have reasoning problems
struggle to reason abstract ideas and imagine objects they cant see
explain formal operations
abstract reasoning develops
children can think in a scientific way
children can focus on an argument without getting distracted by content
formal reasoning tested by syllogisms
