Research methods- Aims and Hypothesis Flashcards
Define the aim
Statement about the purpose/intent of the study and what it intends to investigate
Define the hypothesis of an investigation
predictions of an investigation’s outcome that make specific reference to the independent variables (IVs) manipulated and dependent variables (DVs) measured by the researchers
Define Operationalisation
Defining variables in such a way to make them easy to manipulate/ measure
What are the first 3 steps that need to be carried out when conducting research?
-Identify the aim of the study
-Independent and dependent variables and operationalise them
-State hypothesis
What are the two types of hypotheses?
-Null hypothesis
-Experimental (alternative) hypothesis
What is a null hypothesis?
-States that the independent variable will not affect the dependent variable or that any difference will occur
What is an experimental hypothesis?
-Predicts the independent variable will affect the dependent variable
What are the two types of experimental hypotheses and what are they?
-Directional (one-tailed) - states the direction of the predicted difference between conditions
-Non-directional (two-tailed)- Does not state the direction of the predicted difference between conditions
