research issues Flashcards
extraneous variable
any variable that may affect the dependent variable if it is not controlled
confounding variables
extraneous variable that interfers with the relationship betweeen an experiment’s IV and DV
demand characteristics
any cue from the researcher or from the research situation that may be interpreted by participants as revealing the purpose of an investigation - can influence participants behaviour
investigator effects
when the researcher influences the behaviour of the participants
- through behaviour, personality or appearance
standardisation
when the researcher makes the extraneous variables the same for all the participants in a study
random allocation
participants are assigned a t random to experimental groups
counterbalancing
an attempt to control for the effects of order in a repeated measures design: half in the opposite order
how do you deal with participant variables ?
matching - when a particular characteristic of the participant is divided equally across the groups
random allocation - assigned randomly
