probability and significance Flashcards
what is probability ?
A measure of the likelihood that a particular event will occur with zero indicate statistical impossibility and one statistical certainty
What is significance?
A statistical terms that tells us how sure we are a difference or correlation exist
What is critical value?
When testing a hypothesis, the numerical boundary or cut off point between acceptance and rejection of the null hypothesis
What is type one error?
The incorrect rejection of a true null hypothesis, a false positive
What is type two error?
The failure to reject a false null hypothesis, a false negative
why is it referred as an alternative hypothesis?
It is alternative to the null hypothesis, so there is no difference between the conditions
What does statistical test determine?
which hypothesis is true and thus whether we accept or reject the null hypothesis
What is the usual level of significance in psychology?
0.05%
When does the probability observed affect occur?
when there is no affect in the population is equal to or less than 5% - this means when a research claims to have found a significant difference thetr is still up to 5% chance that it isn’t true for the target population from which the sample was drawn
what is calculated value?
Once a statistical has been calculated, the result is a number
how do you check for statistical significance?
The calculated value must be compared with a critical value
using tables of critical values, there are three criteria :
- One tailed or two tailed test ?
- The number of participants in the study this is usually as the end value of the table
- The level of significance
