Reproductive system Flashcards
What are gametes
sex cells- sperm or ovum
Difference between mitosis and meiosis
Mitosis = somatic cells; divides into 2 identical Meiosis= germ cells; divides into 2 sets of half chromosomes
Zygote
A fertilized egg with a full set of genetic material
Gonads
organ that produces gamets- ovaries or testes
How do sperm leave the body?
From testes to epididymis to vas deferens to prostate to urethra
What is follicle stimulating hormone (FSH)?
Promotes production of sperm, menses, secondary female characteristics, estrogen
What is luteinizing hormone (LH)
Promotes testosterone (produced in the testes) for secondary male sex features and sex organ fx, causes ovulation
What is the pituitary glands role in reproduction?
It secretes FSH and LH once puberty hits
Graafian follicle
fluid filled structure that carries an immature egg egg.
What is ovulation
Egg ruptures from follicle and enters fallopian tube
What is an empty follicle called?
Corpus luteum- secretes progesterone that thickens uterus lining
Describe the hormones during the menstrual cycle
FSH makes follicle develop, follicle secrets estrogen, estrogen promoters LH, LH causes ovulation, corpus luteum cauyses progesterone, progesterone causes uterine thickening, no implantation causes uterine shedding
