Chemical reactions Flashcards
Chemical reactions can happen between
atoms, molecules, and compunds
Molecule
An arrangement of 2 or more atoms (any element) bonded together
Compound
A substance made of 2 or more elements
Chemical equation
Mathematical representation of a chemical reaction. “reactants” to the left and “products” to the right separated by an arrow
Single replacement reation
When an element reacts with a compound and takes the place of another element in the compund
Double replacement reation
When two compounds react causing the + and - ions of the two substances to change places
Decomposition reaction
When a compound breaks apart
Synthesis reaction
When 2 substances combine to create a more complex product
Oxidation (redox) reduction
A transfer of elections between 2 chemical species. Reduction comes from gain of electron, oxidation comes from loss of electron. Combustion, rust, energy formation
Dissolution
Ions that make up a solid are pulled apart and coated in water
Acid
pH less than 7. Transfers proton to another molecule
Base
pH more than 7. Accepts a proton from another molecule
What yields from an acid/base reation
salt + water
What effects the rate of a reaction?
Concentrations, temp, pressure, pH, if there is a catalyst present
Endothermic reaction
Absorbs heat. When temp rises, reaction rate increases
