Integumentary system Flashcards
What makes up the integumentary system?
Skin, glands, hair, nails
What are the three layer of the skin from superficial to internal
Epidermis, dermis, hypodermis
Epidermis layer
Made of epithelial tissues; does not have blood vessles, regenerates once a month
Dermal/ cutaneous layer
Made of connective tissue, hair follicles, sebum glands, capillaries, blood vescles
Hypodermis/ subqutaneous layer
Areolar and adipose tissues, highly vascular, above the muscle layer
What do sebaceous glands do?
Secrete sebum to keep hair and skin flexible and water resistant
What forms from ceruminous gland’s mixture of sebum and dead epithelial cells?
Ear wax
What does the apocrine gland do?
Sex pheromone sweat gland connected to the hair; makes more fatty acids
What do eccrine/merocrine glands do?
Regular sweat gland
What are the 6 functions of the integumentary system?
Body protection Temp regulation Communication tool sensory tool synthesizes vit D Removes metabolic wastes
What are the two primary means of thermoregulation of the skin?
Perspiration and diameter changes of blood vessles
Where are the thermoreceptors of the integumentary system?
Hypothalamus and skin
