Properties of substances Flashcards
Intensive physical properties
Physical properties that do not change by the substance’s size. Boiling point, melting point, luster, conductivity, malleability, density, specific heat
Specific heat capacity
The amount of energy needed to change the temp of 1 gram of a substance by 1 degree celcius
Extensive properties
Characteristics that change with sample size. length, volume, mass, energy, enthalpy, entropy
Polar covalent bond
Electrons are NOT equally shared between molecules, creates a negative and positive spot on the molecule
Hydrogen bond
A type of non-covalent bond between the partial negative region of an O molecule and a partial positive of a hydrogen, creating surface tension
Non-polar covalent bond
Electrons are shared evenly between molecules
Diffusion
the passive movement of a substance from areas of high concentration to low
Osmosis
The diffusion of water through semi permeable membranes down a concentration gradient
