Reproductive System Flashcards
List the 9 components to the male reproductive system
Prostate gland, scrotum, epididymis, testes, sperm, penis, urethra, vas deferens, seminal vesicle
What are the 8 components to the female reproductive system
Vulva, vagina, ovary, cervix, fallopian tube, uterus, ovum, urethra
What is the function of the ovary
Produce eggs for fertilisation and they make the hormones oestrogen progesterone
What is the function of the fallopian tube
The passageway for an egg and sperm to meet and for a fertilised egg to make its way to the uterus
What is the function of the cervix
Allows fluids such as menstrual blood, to pass from the uterus into the vagina
What is the function of the vulva
Allows you to menstruate, give brith, urinate and experience sexual pleasure
What is the function of the uterus
Where a fertilised egg implants during pregnancy until the baby develops, its also responsible for your menstrual cycle
What is the function of the vagina
Provides a passageway for blood and tissue from the uterus to leave the body during menstruation
What is thee function of the scrotum
Holds and helps protect the testicles
What is the function of the testes
Responsible for making sperm and are also involved in producing the hormone testosterone
What is the function of the epididymis
Transport sperm from the rete testes to the vas deferens
What is the function of the vascular deferens
Move sperm away from the place of storage to the testicles to the urethra where it leaves the body during ejaculation
What is the function of the seminal vesicle
Produce the fluids that will turn into semen
What is the function of the prostrate gland
Produce the fluid that nourishes and transports sperm
What is the function of the penis
Urination and sexual intercourse
What is the function of the urethra
Allows urine to pass outside the body
How is the endocrine an reproductive system linked
Puberty menopause and ovulation are controlled by the interaction of hormones and the reproductive system
What does the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis (HPG axis) refer to
-hypothalamus
-pituitary gland
-gonadal glands (ovaries and testes)
What are 4 examples of secondary sexual characteristics specific to females
-development of breasts
-widening of pelvis
-maturation of ovaries
-monthly menstruation
What are 4 examples of secondary sexual characteristics specific to males
-voice deepens
-enlargement of testes scrotum and penis
-continuous production of sperm
-facial hair development
What are 2 examples of secondary sexual characteristics in both male and females
-growth of pubic hair and armpit hair
-general changes in behaviour associated with increased sex drive
What is hormone replacement therapy and what does it do
A treatment used to help menopause symptoms. It replaces the hormones oestrogen and progesterone , which fall to low levels as you approach menopause
What 6 menopause symptoms can HRT help to treat
-hot flushes
-night sweats
-sleep problems
-mood wings
-anxiety and low mood
-vaginal dryness
What is the role of FSH
Stimulates egg maturation in the follicles of the ovary. Stimulates follicles in the ovaries to secrete oestrogen
What is the role of LH
At its peak stimulates ovulation. Results in the formation of a corpus luteum
What is the role of oestrogen
Stimulates the uterus to develop a lining. Post ovulation inhibits FSH and LH production.
At what point do the follicular luteal mesnstrual and ovulation phases happen
Follicular phase , day 1-14
Menstrual phase , day 1-7
Ovulation , day 14
Luteal phase , day 15 - 28
