Reproduction in plants Flashcards
Define reproduction
The process used by organisms to make a new member of the same species
What is the function of the sepals ?
Protects the flower before it opens up
What is the function of the petals ?
Colourful part of flower , attracts insects
What is the function of the statements ?
The male parts of the flower . They produce pollen and help to disperse them
What is the function of the stigma ?
Where pollen attracts during pollination
What is the function of the style ?
Connects the stigma to the ovary
What is the function of the ovary ?
Contains the ova ( female gametes ) to the flower
What is the function of the anther ?
Where pollen is made
What are gametes ?
Sex cells
What is the name of plant gametes ?
They are called haploids ( Only contain half ) the normal amount of DNA ) male gametes = pollen , female = ova
Define pollination
The transfer of pollen from the anther to the stigma either of the same flower / plant or a different plant / flower
What is it called when a plant pollinates it’s self ?
self pollination
What is it called when a plant / flower releases its pollen to another plant ?
cross pollination
Name two ways plants pollinate
Wind pollination
Insect pollination
Wind pollination ?
When transfer of pollen is carried by wind
Insect pollination ?
When insects transfer pollen during pollination
Example of wind pollination
Grass
Example of Insect pollination
Sun flowers , roses , orange
What is nectar ?
A sweet aromatic liquid
What is the function of nectar ?
Attracts and rewards insects for there role in pollination
What is a double fertilisation ?
This is the process by which the ova fuse with the sperm from pollen to form embryos as well as causing the development of the fruit
What are seeds ?
Seeds are plant zygotes ( results of fertilisation of ova )
How are seeds formed ?
They are formed when sperm cells from pollen fuse with ova
What is the embryo ?
The cluster of cells which result from the division of the zygote
What is the food store ?
The glucose within the seed which provides energy for the seeding before it begins to photosynthesis
How does dispersal aid the survival of new plants ?
The dispersal of seeds means that the resulting plants have access to more light , minerals etc
How are seeds adapted for wind dispersal ?
Seeds which are dispersed by wind are very light and have attachments which help them catch the wind
How are seeds adapted for animal dispersal ?
Seeds can be dispersed by animals will have hooked attachments or eaten or dispersed in poo
How have seeds adapted for water dispersal ?
They are able to float
Example of a seed adapted to water ?
Coconut
Define germination
The process by which seeds split to grow and form seeding
