Cell division Flashcards
Define cell division
When new cells are produced parent cells divide to create new cells
What are chromosomes ?
Structures found in the nucleus in every cell
each chromosome contains a strand of DNA
How many chromosomes does a human have ?
46 in total
Name the two types of cell division
Mitosis and Meiosis
How is the genetic information carried through the man
Sperm cell
How is the genetic information carried for the female ?
Egg cell
Define mitosis
A type of cell division that results in two daughter cells each having the same number and kind of chromosomes as the parent nucleus
Define meiosis
Gametes are formed from cells in the reproductive organs
Define DNA
They carry the genetic code that determines the characteristics of a living thing.
Define
A gene is a short section of DNA. Each gene codes for a specific protein by specifying the order in which amino acids must be joined together.
Define gametes
Gametes are sex cells. The male gametes are the sperm, and the female gametes are the eggs.
Gametes contain one set of genetic information, while body cells contain two sets of genetic information
Define fertilisation
Fertilisation is the joining or fusion of a male gamete and a female gamete. The new cell that is formed divides over and over again by mitosis
