Aerobic Respiration Flashcards
What are the three most important ways that a body uses energy for ?
Active transport
Movement
cell division
How does the body obtain Glucose ?
Eat carbohydrate
Digested
small intestine absorbs the glucose
diffuses into the plasma in the blood stream
blood transports the plasma around the body
diffuses into the cell
How does the body get oxygen ?
Goes into the lungs
diaphragm contracts and pulls air into lungs
Oxygen diffuses from alveoli into the blood
blood transports oxygen using haemoglobin in red blood cells
diffuses into muscles
What is the word equation for respiration ?
Glucose + Oxygen —- Carbon dioxide + water + ( energy )
what is the main function of mitochondria ?
The main job of mitochondria is to perform cellular respiration. This means it takes in nutrients from the cell, breaks it down, and turns it into energy.
What is the structure of mitochondria ?
They are made of two membranes. The outer membrane covers the organelle and contains it like a skin. The inner membrane folds over many times and creates layered structures called cristae. The fluid contained in the mitochondria is called the matrix.
What is the advantage of anaerobic respiration ?
produces ATP very quickly
Can give you a bit more energy ( boost )
