3 Reasons why deforestation occurs ?
Logging - producing wood for paper , furniture etc
Living space - Enables house building for people
Transport - Building roads for transport
Why are forests described as Carbon sinks ?
The trees in forests use up a lot f Co2 from the air for photosynthesis
This traps carbon in organic material
Effect of the Global climate of deforestation ?
Causes an increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide
Resulting in a warming effect
What is biodiversity ?
The range of different organisms living in a ecosystem
What is the effect of deforestation on biodiversity ?
It destroys habitats
Kills species
Why is the loss of biodiversity a problem ?
Effects the food chain - killing off species can affect several other species in an ecosystem
Loss of natural resources - Killing off species eg plants , could limit sources of new products
What are peat bogs ?
Areas of wetland that have high concentrations of decomposed organic material within the soil
What is the role of peat bogs in the ecosystem ?
Provide new habitats
Release gases
What is the use of peat ?
Could be used fr a source of fuel
What is the problem with peat ?
Generates more Co2 which could further contribute to climate change
