Human reproductive system Flashcards
Define Haploid
Cells with a half the amount of DNA
Define gametes
Sex cells
Define oviducts or fallopian tube
These are tubes which connect the ovaries to the uterus ( womb ) . This is were fertilisation takes place
Define fertilisation
The fusion of sperm and egg cells to form an zygote
Define implantation
When the embryo fuses with the walls of the uterus
Define embryo
The cells formed when sperm fuses with an egg cell and divides
Define uterus
Muscular organ with thick walls where the embryo implants - where the fetus grows
Define ovary
Organ in females where the eggs were made stored
What do n and 2n signify on the diagram
n = half the compliment of DNA 2n = the full amount of DNA
Define Oogenesis
Processes of producing ecotypes ( Gametes )
Define fetus
The implanted blastocyst + ( developing embryo )
Define meiosis
Cell division which produces gametes
Define copulation
Sexual intercourse - This means by which sperm is introduced into the vagina
Define fertilisation
The fusion between a sperm and a egg to form a zygote
Describe what the main purpose of meiosis
The process which produces gametes. This ensures that the gametes are haploid ( 1/2 the amount of DNA )
