Reproduction and meiosis Flashcards
what is reproduction
the production of a new individual
what are the 2 different types of reproduction
sexual
asexual
what is sexual reproduction
when gametes from mother and father fuse to create offspring with different combinations of genes
what is asexual reproduction
where no gametes are fused and all offspring will have the same genes as the parent
what is an advantage of sexual reproduction
creates variation so if the environment changes individuals can survive
what is a disadvantage of sexual reproduction
has to find a mate which takes time and energy
what are 2 advantages of asexual reproduction
needs only one parent so the reproductive cycle is faster
offspring are genetically identical so there is an advantage for organisms that are well-adapted to the environment
what is a disadvantage of asexual reproduction
no variation so if the environment changes then all may die
what type of cell division is used in sexual reproduction
meiosis
what type of cell division is used in asexual reproduction
mitosis
what is meiosis
a type of cell division that produces 4 genetically different haploid daughter cells
describe what happens in meiosis in steps
- before the parent cell divides each chromosome is duplicated
- then the parent cell divides twice to form 4 daughter cells
- each daughter cell will have different chromosomes
