Renal replacement therapy Flashcards
1
Q
Peritoneal dialysis ( CAPD )
A
- An incision is made near the bellybutton and catheter is permenantly placed in the abdominal cavity
- Dialysis fluid is pumped into abdominal cavity and flushed around intestines
- Peritoneal membrane acts as a filter for solutes to move across conc gradient
- Dialysis accumulates waste products of the blood
- Dialysis fluid is then flushed out and drained
2
Q
Complications of CAPD
A
- Peritonitis - inflammation of the peritoneum caused by bacterial infection
- Hernias may form
3
Q
Haemodialysis
A
- Cannula between atriovenous fistula or central vein
2. Blood travels through an artificial kidney and flows over dialysis machine membrane
4
Q
Kidney transplant surgery
A
- incision through abdominal wall
- Aortic wall, patch of renal artery and ureters are harvested
- Perfused with cold solution
- Renal vein anastomosed with external illiac vein
- Renal artery is anastomosed with external illiac artery

Complication of transplanation
A
Rejection of kidneys
