Kidney stones Flashcards
1
Q
Nephrolithiasis
A
Formation of stone within urinary tract, solutes of urine percipitate out and crystalise
2
Q
Risk factors for kidney stone formation
A
- Hypercalcaemia
- Diet heavy in oxolate rich food
- Low fluid intake
3
Q
Types of kidney stone
A
- Calcium oxolate - solute structure/ black-brown
- Calcium phosphate - dirty white
- Uric acid stone - red/brown
- Staghorm calculus
4
Q
Symptoms
A
- Dull back pain
- Renal colic - sharp, constant pain caused by dilation of the ureter (loin to groin pain)
- Haematururia
5
Q
Staghorn calculus
A
- Stone occurs due to an infection, bacteria in urine secretes an enzyme which breaks down urea to secrete ammonia
- Ammonia causes mucoprotein to be released called matrix
- Fills kidney lke a cast and crystalises
6
Q
Investigation
A
- PH should be measured as certain stones favour certain ph
* Serum urate and calcium
7
Q
Treatment
A
- Pericutaneous nephrolithotomy - minimally invasive procedure used to remove large stone from the kidney through a puncture wound in the skin
