Reliability and Validity Flashcards
What is reliability
How consistently a method measures smth
What does reliability relate to
It relates to our ability to repeat a study and obtain the same results and links to replication
What are the two types of internal reliability
Split half method and Inter Observer Reliability
What is the split half method
Compare one half of questions to the other half to check for similar levels of difficulty
What is inter observer reliability
Compare the observations of the observers to check they are interpreting behaviour in the same way
What is external reliability
Reliability tested over time
What are the 2 types of external reliability
Test retest method and replication
What is the test retest method
If the same question air /interview is conducted more than once, the same results should be obtained
What is replication
An experiment should obtain the same results when repeated if the same standardised procedures are used
What is validity
How accurately a method measures something and it relates to how truthful, real or honest a study is
What is internal validity
How much the findings of the dependent variable actually have to do with the manipulation of the independent variable and not the factors
What is external validity
Whether the results can be generalised beyond the study
What are two types of external validity
Population and ecological
What is population validity
Can be generalised to the general population
What is ecological validity
