Observation Types Flashcards
What is a Naturalistic observation?
when the target behaviour is observed in its natural setting without any intervention
Advantage of naturalistic tq
there is a high external validity and is natural
Disadvantage of naturalistic tq
there is low control
What is a Controlled observation?
when the behaviour is being studied within an controlled environment away from their natural setting
Adv of controlled tq
can be easily replicated in standardisation
Disadv of controlled tq
there is low external validity
What is a Covert observation?
an undisclosed observation where the participant is unaware they are being observed
Adv of covert tq
fewer demand characteristics
Disadv of covert tq
ethically questionable and wrong
What is an Overt observation?
a disclosed observation as the patient is aware they are being studied and have given their consent
Adv of overt tq
not ethically questionable or wrong
Disadv of overt tq
greater demand characteristics
What is a Participant observation?
where the research is involved in the group they are studying in
Adv of participant tq
greater insight and experience
Disadv of participant tq
possible loss of objectivity which causes a greater possible bias
