Descriptive Statistics Flashcards
What is ‘presentation of qualitative data’
It is the visual representation of qualitative or quantitative data
What are the 2 types of presentations of data
.tables/graphs
.distribution curves
What are tables and graphs typically used for
Summarising data
What are distribution curves typically used for
To express how the data is spread out usually compared to the mean
What are the 3 types of tables/graphs we need to know
Bar chart, histograms and scatter diagram
What are the 2 types of distribution curves
Normal and skewed
Describe a bar chart
.the height of each bar represents the frequency of that item
.categories are on the horizontal (x-axis)
.frequency is on the vertical (y-axis)
What is a bar chart used for
For data that isn’t continuous
Why is there a gap left in between the bars
To indicate the lack of continuity
Describe a histogram
● The horizontal axis (x-axis) must be continual (therefore you cannot draw a histogram with data in categories)
● There should be no gaps between the bars
what is the difference between histograms and bar charts
The x axis is numerical for histograms and categorical for bar chart
No gaps between the bars in histogram
For histograms the area is proportional to data no for bar charts its the length of the bar
When do you use a scatter diagram
When doing a correlational analysis and provides an initial indication if there is a relationship between the variables
