Experiment Types Flashcards
What is a Laboratory Experiment?
They are experiments that are held under highly controlled conditions
Adv of Lab
. High control over extraneous variables
. Demonstrates cause and effects
. Easily replicable
Disadv of Lab
.low generalizability and participant is aware of being studied
.greater demand characteristics
. Not represented in real life
What are Field Experiments?
These are experiments also held under highly controlled conditions but in a natural real world setting rather than in a lab
Adv of Field
.more natural, own environment, generalizable
.participant is unaware they are being studied so they have a more usual and natural behaviour
Disadv of Field
.CVs and EVs are harder to control, the DV changes due to the CVs
.ethical issues-no informed consent, invasion of privacy
. Replication is hard
What are Natural Exp?
Natural exp are held in real world settings but the researcher has no control over the environment or variable
Adv of Natural
. Provides opportunities for research that might not have been taken
.external validity- real life issues, more relevant
Disadv of Natural
.rare natural event- reduces ability to generalise
.not clear if IV effects DV
What are Quasi Exp?
Quasi Exp contains a naturally occurring IV but this IV is within people already for (example age height gender ect…)
Adv of Quasi
.high control-often lab conditions
.comparison between pre-existing types of people
Disadv of Quasi
.no random allocation of participants- pre exisisting IV, CVs
.may be confounding variables
