What is regionalism ?
Regionalism refers to the development of institutionalised cooperation between states from a geographical region
What is sovereignty?
This is the idea that there isn’t any higher authority or power above the state
What is meant by intergovernmentalism ?
Interactions between states that are based on sovereign independence
What is meant by federalism?
What is meant by widening and deepening ?
The process by which the EU has attempted to expand membership while furthering integration
What is Supranationalism
This refers to a large amount of power given to an authority which in theory is placed higher than the state
What is federalism ?
The legal and political structures where oiwe is distributed between the two distinct levels
What is NAFTA
- This is known as the north atlantic trade association
- NAFTA was created by the USA & Canada and Mexico and came into force in 1994
- There aims were to eliminate tarriffis and barriers between countries through the use of an intergovernmental decision making process
What were some of the developments of NAFTA?
- Trade which has tripled among the NAFTA countries
- Agreements such as the north american agreement on environmental cooperation which aims to work cooperatively to improve the conditions and protections of the environment
- NAALC ( North american agreement on labour cooperation aims to improve working conditions and living standards and to protect , enhance and enforce basic rights
- However trumps threat of withdrawal in 2017 and the stark differences between the countries politically , economically , socially between the partners makes deeper integration unlikely
What is AU ?
- This is known as the Organisation of Afrian Unity

- This is known as the Organisation of African Unity (OAC) which was replaced with 32 states formed in 1963 however later replaced with the AU in 2002 now consisting of 52
What were the aims of the AU ?
- To promote peace , stability and security , democratic principles ,institutions , participation and good governance
- To defend sovereignty . territorial integrity and independence of its members states
- To achieve greater unity and solidarity between African countries and peoples of african
What are the developments of the AU
- The au has changed focus from supporting liberation movements in the colonial and apartheid territories under the OAU to an organisation spearheading Africa’s developments and integration
- It is has far-reaching plans , including tackling poverty, establishing a human rights court , a central bank and a single markets with a single currency
- It has deployed its focus for peacekeeping purpose in Burundi , Surdan and Somalia as it believes peace must come before prosperity
- However its plans for further integration are limited by its lack of finances the fact many member states are autocracies , disagreements about the best way to devlop and by its failure to act in lybia
Explain what the Arab League is .
- This is an organisation that is made up of 22 Arab-speaking states formed in 1945 and originally had six states
What were the aims of the Arab league ?
- To strengthen relations between member states
- To coordinate their policies in order to achieve cooperation between them
- To safeguard their independence and sovereignty , and a general concern with affairs and interest of the Arab countries
