What does Self-Determination Theory assume?
That all students posses inherent growth tendencies and psychological needs that provide a motivational founation.
Students are always in active exchange with their classroom environment which can nurture their inner motivation resources or neglect them

the student internalizes new forms of extrinsic motivation as his/her own
When synthesis is low what is the result?
the classroom imposes external and introjected forms of extrinsic motivation on the student

Relatedness is a sense of being close to another person
It occurs when teachers create the conditions in which students feel special and important to the teacher (teacher provides a sense of warmth affection and approval)
What is Supportiveness?
Supportiveness is a teacher’s affirmation of a student’s capacity for self direction by accepting students as they are, providing encouragement, assist them in their efforts to realize goals they set for themselves
Why is supportiveness important?
helps students feel competent, be more creative, and feel in more in control of their learning/engaged
What is Gentle Discipline?
a supportive socializing strategy that involves guiding and explaining why one way of thinking or behaving is right and another is wrong
