Lecture 8 Flashcards
What are the most common critiques of Ericsson’s Theory?
- Some children pick up things like music or a sport more quickly than others.
- What about certain Physical Advantages?
- Giftedness/Talent
What is Gardener’s objection to Ericsson’s theory?
He has taught piano for many years and children differ in their ability to sight, read, master and interpret music.
What is Ericsson and Charness’ response to Gardeners objection to their theory?
They prefer to attribute the differences in early performance to prior experience and relevant training. Use Suzuki music teachers as an example. They do not believe in innate musical talent and attribute improvement to practice.
How would Ericsson respond to someone pointing to natural Physical Advantages to explain talent/expertise?
He would say that those Physical characteristics are actually the result of early deliberate practice.
What are the barriers to exceptional talent?
- Early Exposure
- Exposure during the critical developmental period
- Keen interest in the domain (genetic?)
- Financial resources
- Lack of top-level instruction
- Demotivation instruction at critical time
- excessive practice leading to injury and burnout
